TAKEAWAY: We update our Pure Design fable on ad experimentation. Much has happened since 2002 in this area, and I am happy to report progress.
Mundo D, the sports supplement of Argentina’s La Voz del Interior, uses silent ad for Telefonica at top of Page One (Garcia Media Latinoamerica)
First came advertising on the front page of American newspapers (big gasp here!), then came silent ads (inspired by what we see in the Internet and, particularly on news websites). Suddenly, there were ads at the top of the page, or belt ads passing thru the middle of the page, and island ads, and pizza shape ads. Since 2004, we have witnessed perhaps the most active level of experimentation with advertising ever in newspapers and magazines. No question that the economic crisis of the past 18 months has had a lot to do with revving up the engines of ad placement and creativity. It is a good thing, and I hope that the signs of economic recovery will not stop it.
We bring you some selected pages from Next on Sunday (August 16th edition) as a follow up to our coverage of the last two weeks from Lagos, Nigeria. As you recall, Next on Sunday starts with a broadsheet first section, then goes to tabloid for Metro, Sports, Arts & Culture. Yesterday, August 17th, Next the daily was launched.
Assorted pages from Next on Sunday appear here:

Photo pages play a key role in Next on Sunday. A short “mini story” accompanies these pages, especially to tie a single theme together

Now that I have fully presented the first of six sections of Pure Design on TheMarioBlog, I am offering the entire initial section, “Words,” available for download—all 33 pages of it. This may be useful for those of you saving or printing out Pure Design and will be done following each of the remaining sections. At the end of our journey through words, type, layout, color, pictures, and process, I will publish the entirety of Pure Design in one file.
The 2009 edition of World Press Trends from WAN/IFRA is now available. I always like to review this report for its complete information on global circulation, advertising and online trends in our industry. All countries in the world where daily newspapers are published are covered in the publication.
This year the WAN/IFRA folks have decided to publish a print version but only make the book available on pdf.
