Marshall Matlock sends us information about the scholarship that the SND Foundation is setting up to honor Professor Edmund C. Arnold, a man who inspired generations of students and newspaper people through five decades of a career dedicated to making newspapers read and look better. We at Garcia Media are proud to have been among the first contributors to this worthy cause. For those interested, here is the official press release:
The Society for News Design Foundation has established a $5,000 yearly scholarship that will be awarded each year to a student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in honor of Edmund C. Arnold, who passed away in February of 2007.
Dr. Arnold was chair of the School’s Graphic Arts Department until he left SU to teach in Virginia. He is considered to be the “father of newspaper design.”
The award is open to SU juniors and rising seniors. The first scholarship will be announced at the School’s annual Awards Ceremony that takes place each spring. The application’s deadline will be announced soon.
In addition to a resume, transcript, portfolio and two short essays, applicants must have a character reference letter from a professor or adviser. The letter must offer examples of the applicant’s responsibility, integrity and judgment.
A junior recipient will keep the scholarship through their senior year provided they still meet all the criteria for eligibility.
SND will provide guidance on the choice, but the recipient will be chosen by Syracuse.
There will be two students who receive $2,500 scholarships each. Thus during the second year there will be a junior and a senior who will be getting a $2,500 award each and that’s where the $5,000 total comes from. Each student will get the $2,500 award for two years (their junior & senior years) as long as they remain in good standing.
Students will be assessed on talent, scholarship, service and character.
If you wish to contribute to this scholarship fund make a check payable Society for News Design Foundation, with a note on the check that the donation is for the Ed Arnold Scholarship fund. Contributions are tax deductible. You will receive a letter confirming you made the contribution shortly after the contributor’s check arrives at the Society’s office at 1130 Ten Rod Road, Suite D-202, North Kingstown, RI 02852-4180.
Dr. Mario Garcia, Sr., founder of Garcia Media, became the School’s Graphic Arts Department when Dr. Arnold left the University in 1977.
