Friends, it has been four months of this surreal Covid19 isolation which has changed our lives forever. I have retrieved to my Florida beach condo in Belleair Beach, which is an ideal place in which to spend this unusually uncertain and anxiety-driven time. But we are doing well, surviving each day and hoping that this, too, will pass quickly.
The launch of Handelsblatt: It was a great day July 6 for the team of German’s financial daily and the launch of the new look for the print edition went well and has been received with bravos from readers and media people alike. I missed being there, but wonderful to work with the team and we continue now with the digital/mobile parts of the project.
Finishing touches on India’s Hindustantimes: I continue to work weekly with the great team of this Delhi-based newspaper as we aim for a mid August launch of all new strategies. Stay tuned.
My diary of isolation: Occasionally, I have made entries into my diary about what’s like to be going thru this unusual time. This is one that I posted recently:
Diary of isolation—Day 104:
“…time was not passing…it was turning in a circle…”
― Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude
This line from Garcia Marquez’ masterpiece is one that has resonated with me during this surreal—and sometimes almost like the magical realism that the great Gabo so exceptionally offers us in his work——period in which we all have lived as a result of the Covid19 pandemic.
So now it has been 100 days of life turned upside down, diaries and watches hidden in the drawer of a time that was, dress shoes and bow ties sort of museum relics, and, long pants? What’s that! Instead, an accumulation of days that are strung together like good fettuccini, but without the sauce. Indeed, it has been a circle, but not necessarily a vicious one. We all have had time to meditate, to learn about the wonderful lives and times of birds, to hear the gossiping of seagulls on the edge of the water at 7 a.m., to admire the perfection with which those reddish Florida egrets dive for their catch, to say hello to those guys who appear with their fishing poles each morning and never seem to catch anything, not to mention the young couples in love that appear at sunset, accompanied by a photographer, to capture an image of them kissing before the sun kisses Asia. As a frequent flyer of Lufthansa (Miss you, dear!) I am a member of the exclusive HON Circle—the most loyal of Lufthansa flyers. I thought I was the ultimate circle. This one is. It is a circle that, through its continuity, provides a foundation of security, a sense that we don’t need so much to be happy, that, in fact, we need much much less and that, at any age, you can discover yourself, make yourself better perhaps and re read One Hundred Years of Solitude for the sixth time, but with a different perspective. This is Macondo, and I am glad that somehow we were pushed by circumstance into a circle that will forever alter who we are.
