Diario Do Amazonas: redesigning in the midst of economic crisis

TAKEAWAY: How does a newspaper tackle a major change, such as a redesign, during a time of crisis? In Brazil, Diario Do Amazonas shows the way. The project, conducted by Garcia Media Latinoamerica, launched in early January.

Diario Do Amazonas is a relatively new newspaper—-24 years old——but it felt it needed to rethink itself. With the help of Garcia Media Latinoamerica, and Rodrigo Fino as chief architect of the project, Diario embarked into a project that involved four essentials:

1. New look and even a new logo.
2. Content reorganization to change the flow of items in the newspaper.
3. An evolution of its graphic style.
4. A review of production methods inside the newspaper’s operation.

While the editors of Diario wanted to maintain many of the best known graphic elements of the newspaper, such as color palette for headers, they were open to typographic changes. Two new fonts, Swift and Chronicle, were introduced. These fonts gave Diario a much needed aura of elegance and functionality, while allowing it to differentiate itself from the competition.
