These days I find myself probably the busiest I have ever been since those day sin the 1990s when my main task was to “redesign” printed newspapers, and, more specifically, to assist editorial teams with the introduction of color to their black and white newspapers.
Today, however, the main topic of discussion is not so much aesthetics, but what I consider to be one of the biggest transformational movements ever in newsrooms, one that affects the very core of journalistic practices: how we tell stories to be consumed on mobile devices.
As a result, the training required to tell stories efficiently on mobile is not limited to traditional journalistic outlets. Indeed, this Eidos Media event in New York City, Oct. 25, was titled Future Financial 3, the third year that the technology firm based in Italy has assembled a group of financial types: bankers, researchers, all involved in the communicating of financial information. My keynote was an introduction to the media environment of today, how we consume information on mobile devices, and the lessons of linear digital storytelling.
It was a great audience with good questions. My hope is that they returned to their offices fully charged and ready to turn all those long, often not too sexy financial research reports, into more palatable stories created to be consumed on mobile devices, which is where many will be reading them.
I am delighted that corporate communication practitioners are becoming aware of the importance of learning to tell stories for mobile platforms. As a matter of fact, about 40% of my current work is with corporate communication groups.
