Bill Cosby: fall of an American icon

To a generation, he was America’s Dad: playing a beloved father figure on TV. This week he appeared on the front pages of almost every US newspaper, handcuffed, and sentenced to prison.

He wore a white T-shirt, red suspenders and handcuffs as he was escorted out of the courtroom.

Bill Cosby, an idol to many for portraying one of television’s most beloved fathers, headed for the state prison in Pennsylvania.

I was curious to see that the front pages of newspapers from coast to coast gave the story some play, from the classics, such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, to the tabloids and the rest of the regional newspapers.  For many readers, there was a sense of confusion–and even momentary sadness– to see the actor they revered as Dr. Cliff Huxtable, the wise and friendly medical doctor with a big family on whom he doted good fatherly advice, walking in handcuffs on the way to prison.
