With four days to go before the opening of the Beijing Olympics 2008, newspapers worldwide prepare special supplements to indicate their coverage of the summer’s top sports event.

During the weekend in Frankfurt I collected copies of Die Zeit, Welt am Sonntag and Frankfurter Allgemeine, all of which devoted large front-page real estate to the Olympics.

In our video posting yesterday we discussed the importance of a Center of Visual Impact; the key to all the front pages shown here was a large CVI to lure the reader, and, in this case, to show that this was no ordinary Sunday. Inside, each newspaper carried 8-page Olympic special packages.

Most impressive: Welt am Sonntag, with splendid info graphics of particular events as well as a full page detailed rendering of the site of the games, a new 1.16-million euro sports stadium built especially for the game.

Multi media: Die Zeit’s coverage sends reader for audio portions of the Olympic story.

Missing: We wonder why the Frankfurter Allegemeine, with such attractively designed Sunday package, still does not mention its website high up on the page, where the newspaper’s logo is located.
An oversight?

Toni Nadal is the trainer and mentor of his nephew, Rafael Nadal, the #1 ranked tennis player, This is what Uncle Toni, as everyone refers to him, constantly tells his famous nephew:

“I believe that one achieves happiness through hard work and discipline. We achieve happiness through austerity. In our society, discipline is not highly regarded. We tend to abuse materialism.”

As quoted in El Pais, Madrid, Spain: August 2, 2008.
