The more I get engaged with AI, and, as I read daily reports about AI— the often good, the sometimes bad and the occasionally horrific stories that are like flashing green and red lights in my email– the more that I ask myself many questions about the creative potential of the bots. One topic that resonates with me is that of artificial creative intelligence.
As readers of TheMarioBlog know, I often indulge in these discussions via comparisons of what a human illustrator has done for a specific story in a particular publication, and what my friendly robot would do given the same material. Recently, one of my posts asked :
Artificial Creative Intelligence-is there such a thing?
I do not have an answer, so what I do is to engage in exercises that allow me and you to see comparisons. This blog post today is a continuation of that.
“Who wore it best?”
Disclaimer: I admit that my inspiration for these comparisons of humans versus bots comes from People magazine’s occasional feature titled, Who Wore it Best, where the editors place the images of two celebrities side by side wearing the same outfit. The readers decide. Here is an example:
Let’s do the same here, as I take two stories from this week’s New York Times that used illustrations.
Story 1–
New tests promise to tell you if you have the cells of a 30-year-old or a 60-year-old. Here’s what to know about them.
Above, the illustration created by Mike Ellis for The Times.
The prompt for Midjourney: Poster illustration with colors orange, skin tones, blue background for story: What’s Your ‘Biological Age’? New tests promise to tell you if you have the cells of a 30-year-old or a 60-year-old. Here’s what to know about them. Old versus young profiles. Clock marks how time affects our bodies.
The Midjourney results:
Story 2
Post-pandemic, winter has become one big blur of coughs and colds. Did something change?
The prompt: Collage illustration for newspaper for story with headline The Case of the Never-Ending Illness Post-pandemic, winter has become one big blur of coughs and colds. Did something change? Use pills, tissues, people blowint their noses, droopy eyes, cold misery, colors orange, pink, yellow blue, pastels
The Midjourney results:
So, who wore it best?
I suggest you take a few minutes to go to answer the question, providing rationale for your choice. Have fun. And, remember, the question continues:
Artificial Creative Intelligence-is there such a thing?

As I put finishing touches on the manuscript of my new book, AI: The Next Revolution for Content Creation, I am aware that the number of AI-related headlines that appear in my mailbox daily is on the increase, frustrating the author of a book that must have a date of completion, and realizing that in today’s fast paced technological advance environment, books must have websites created for updates.
