Argentina’s La Nación: introduces compact format today

One of Argentina’s oldest and most respected newspapers, La Nacion launches a new “compact” format Oct. 31, but maintains the broadsheet format during weekends.

This is the front page of today’s La Nacion: first day as a compact.

La Nacion: going compact weekedays but retaining broadsheet format for weekends

Special content: the back page, international chronicles and the new Sports section

It is a new TV channel for La Nacion: LN+ with news, lifestyle and music programming.

It will be a smaller La Nación starting today, but only Monday through Fridays.  The newspaper will retain its broadsheet format for weekends.  The editors feel that the smaller format is convenient during working days when readers are busier, but that the larger broadsheet format is better for the more leisure readings of weekends.

“This is part of our constant process of updating and renovating. With this change, La Nacion makes a historic leap, but the aim is the same we have always had to respond to the readers’ habits, needs and demands,” stated a story in the Sunday edition of La Nacion.

The new compact format is 41 centimeters high by 28 centimeters wide.

The changes are not limited to the format, say La Nacion editors.

“In addition ,there will be new content, a section devoted to international journalism, plus stories presented in the way that we look for information during working days.  It will be a product with great visual appeal, which will also facilitate and speed up the reading and provide better access to our content. We go for a combination of speed and depth.  There will be longer pieces for those who value quality journalism. In fact, the new printed newspaper will compliment our real time digital content offerings.”

In addition, La Nacion has announced that starting next week it will launch a TV channel, an area which is of total discovery for the newspaper.

Carlos Guyot, La Nacion Managing Editor, explained this move:

“..the digital tsunami, the biggest changing force of the 21st Century also brings opportunities. For example, to create. And that is why, in the journey of transformation, La Nacion decided last year to expand its journalism to the audiovisual language inside the digital world and now create a TV channel.”

So, on November 7, La Nacion launches LN+, its own paid TV channel, which will benefit from La Nacion’s long standing tradition of excellent journalism. Initially, LN+ will have a strong news components, but also lifestyle news, a cooking show with a renowned chef, and also a program dedicated to music.  The TV channel will broadcast directly from La Nacion's newsroom.

A proud Fernan Saguier, La Nacion’s associate publisher, wrote me about the changes at his newspaper:

“We move forward, yes, just like our readers do.”

Our congratulations to our friends at La Nacion for these innovative steps to continue as a newspaper of reference for Argentina and Latin America.
