And the Pulitzer for audio reporting goes to…….

In a not surprising move, the Pulitzer Prize Board announced on Thursday a new award category: audio reporting.

I am delighted to hear this as it will encourage more newsrooms to recognize the importance that audio has in the storytelling process. We will see better content, more polished podcasts, and the re-birth of a genre.  More journalists will want to be training on the art of writing for the ear.  Editors and content managers will evaluate the role of audio in their newsrooms and, hopefully, decide that 2020 is the year when podcasts happen for sure.

As we mentioned in our blog post last week, a new Reuters study confirms that about 12000 new podcasts were started between January and October of this year.  This announcement from the Pulitzer Board will guarantee that the number will increase.

“The renaissance of audio journalism in recent years has given rise to an extraordinary array of non-fiction storytelling,” Pulitzer AdministratorDana Canedy said in a press release. “To recognize the best of that work, the Pulitzer Board is launching an experimental category to honor it.”

The press release added that the new prize will be given “for a distinguished example of audio journalism that serves the public interest, characterized by revelatory reporting and illuminating storytelling.’’

Mario García

Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. More than 700 publications, from The Wall Street Journal to the South China Morning Post, have received his strategic steer. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
