And now, the big ads that (almost) cover homepage

First, it was the full page ad on the front page of a printed newspaper. Now the full screen ad for news websites.

There was a time when a full page ad on the front page of a printed newspaper would raise eyebrows. Then, the practice became quite common, newspaper’s financial fortunes went south and thus readers’ tolerance increased for a gigantic advertisement where Page One usually is.

But, how readers complained about “banner” ads over the logo of their favorite news website in the early days of the Internet.

Now that we enter the post-Covid era (or the learning-to-live-with Covid era), we are beginning to see the huge ads that squash the homepage of the news website almost totally, See the homepage above, from a recent edition of The New York Times. One could hardly get a taste of the headlines on the Times’ newsy home page, but it was easy to see the ad for the Swiss cosmetic product, La Prairie.

Disclaimer: I have been a fan of La Prairie for years, and usually dab a couple of drops of its Skin Caviar after shaving. I was not ready to see La Prairie taking precedent on this day over the more pressing topics like a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine, or the stock market taking a dive.

IS this the shape of ads to come on home pages? How much does an advertiser pay to secure such premium location on a home page? Wonder if any NY Times readers reacted to this?

This is how a normal Times’ homepage ad placement looks:

This is the standard ad placement on home pages:

France’s Le Monde uses an ad under its navigation bar:

The Singapore Straits Times this week presents a full screen ad, which, when eliminated by clicking on x, takes you to the real news homepage:

The Financial Times shows no ads on this edition of its homepage:

The Los Angeles Times displays ad under its logo:
