It is an exercise we carry out often: we see a newspaper illustration created by a human, then we take to Midjourney or DALL-E to see how the bots would handle the same subject.
For the prompt I always use the headline or snippets of text from the story accompanying the illustration.
For inspiration, I turn to the People Magazine fashion photo feature: Who Wore it Best? This is a photo of usually two celebrities wearing the same outfit. The readers decide.
Today’s comparison comes with an illustration from Steve Brodner for The Washington Post. The story’s headline: These politicians denied democracy on Jan. 6. Now, they want your vote.
Here is the Post’s illustration by Steve Brodner, an illustrator and satirist, who also wrote the commentary piece accompanying his illustration:
Here is the Midjourney’s offerings for the same topic:
Here is the one I would consider to be the best of the four:
The illustration by Steve Brodner offers more varied and interesting facial expressions than the one above by Midjourney. His illustration is less cartoony, with more muted colors, which I prefer. However, I am thinking of the large number of small publications, with fewer visual journalists and more restrictive budgets, and the Midjourney illustration offers an acceptable, effective way to illustrate the story.

As I put finishing touches on the manuscript of my new book, AI: The Next Revolution for Content Creation, I am aware that the number of AI-related headlines that appear in my mailbox daily is on the increase, frustrating the author of a book that must have a date of completion, and realizing that in today’s fast paced technological advance environment, books must have websites created for updates.
