To hear the word “deluge” mentioned in relationship to the United Arab Emirates is strange, but so is everything related to climate change today, to the melting of Antartica glaciers which may be shedding ice faster now than they have at any point in the past 5,500 years, to the 100+-degree (40 degrees Celsius) temperatures in the UK for the first time ever to record-breaking temperatures of up to 42°C (107.6°F) throughout all of Europe. So, I am not surprised to see flooding in the UAE, as per this visual presentation today on the front page of client newspaper, the Khaleej Times.
As I have mentioned repeatedly here: no platform competes with the printed page to make large photos tell the story at a glance. This front page capitalizes on one photo that communicates the impact of the floods in the UAE, a place where it seldom rains.
Editors of newspaper titles where a print edition continues to exist need to capitalize on what print can do better. Yes, you can have a great video of that flood for digital/mobile consumption. However, a display of a large photo as we see above makes the story memorable.
Let large photos and illustrations do for print what videos and animated graphics do for digital editions.
