Weekend recap: a little of this and some of that

It’s Friday and here are some items I have saved during the week which I think may be of interest to you, too.

This is the weekend edition of TheMarioBlog and will be updated as needed. The next blog post is Monday, April 23.

It was a productive week for me, mostly spent attending Newscamp 2018 in Augsburg, Germany.

This annual event that attracts about 400 CEOs, publishers, editors and journalists, consisted of a robust program of speakers, with emphasis on change and transformation.  I have blogged about highlights of it Thursday.

Here are some images taken during my own presentation at the event. Most grateful for the warm welcome and reception of the audience to my presentation about digital storytelling and tips for bringing about change in the newsroom.

And a Tweet that captured highlights of my presentation:

The TIME 100 edition is out

It’s that time of the year again when TIME Magazine selects the 100 most influential people. Of interest this year: the choice of five of those young high school students from Parkland, Florida, whose voices have become familiar to Americans as they have become the most energetic advocates of gun control.

The latest Economist

Another clever cover from The Economist that speaks by itself. Direct. Focused. Witty. And right on the money with telling the cover story at a glance.

Even The National Enquirer experiences shrinking sales

Who’d know? According to The Wall Street Journal, the National Enquirer’s parent company, American Media Inc., “faces mounting debt, shrinking sales.”

Shrinking newsstand sales for that most popular, colorful and sometimes controversial tabloid, The National Enquirer, contribute to the company’s woes.  This, in spite that, according to the WSJ piece, 122 covers of the Enquirer have featured President Trump or an attack on his opponents since the start of 2016.

I found it interesting that The National Enquirer was mentioned in one of the Newscamp 2018 presentations. Joe Toscano used an image of The Enquirer when he referred to “fake news” as not a recent phenomenon. “It’s always been there,” Toscano said as he flashed this image on the screen during his presentation:

Things we like

Interesting “bookmark” inside the German magazine Bunte  , calling attention to a loose ad inside. Clever.

And the new TIME Magazine cover. Headline is very small, but packs a punch. Stormy (as in Stormy Daniels, the porn star giving President Trump cause for a sleepless night or two).
