Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has declared three days of national mourning to honor the victims in the country’s deadliest earthquake since 1985. This latest tragedy comes as a powerful quake struck near the town of Raboso in Puebla, about 76 miles southeast of Mexico City. The Tuesday earthquake registered a 7.1 magnitude and has killed more than 200, with the death toll climbing.
I remember the 1985 earthquake clearly. I was working in Mexico City with Roger Black, in a collaboration to redesign the daily newspaper, Novedades. It was by coincidence that we were not in Mexico City the day the earthquake struck. But we arrived a few days later to see the destruction. Most impressive, and an image I will never forget, seeing the giant printing press of the newspaper uprooted by the power of the earthquake.
The images we are seeing on these front pages are quite similar to what appeared on front pages of Mexican newspapers in 1985. Take a look.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Mexico.
Many thanks to colleague Luis Alvarez, of the San Antonio (TX) Express-News, for sending us these incredible front pages.
Everyone is urged to donate to the Mexican Red Cross.
