A piece in the Sunday New York Times by Mekado Murphy highlighted how the advertising campaign for La La Land has made use of multiple posters. These posters are likely to be seen a lot in the next few days following last night Oscar Awards, in which La La Land won 6 Oscars out of a record 14 nominations. (In case you did not watch the Oscars, La La Land was the winner of Best Picture for about 39 seconds, until the announcement was made that it was a mistake, and that Moonlight was the Best Picture winner. Read all about the confusing moment here .
Some of these posters are inspired by jazz albums —Blue Note records come to mind as you can see in the example below.
I tend to like the warm color palette in this one, which picks up on bright colors, many of which we saw in the dresses wore by Emma Stone and other actresses in the film.
And this one is the most iconic of all the La La Land promotional posters, as it presents the key musical number when Emma Stone and Ryan Gossling did a Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse turn, complete with a view of the City of Stars, and a lamp post (remember Singing in the Rain?). I read that this scene was filmed at a park outside of Los Angeles, at Hermosa Beach, and that the lamp posts were put there just for the film, inspiring the city councilmen to now consider replicating the look of the city pier as it appeared in the movie.
Take a look at the famous dancing scene, a highlight of La La Land.
These are eye catching posters, too, and are followed by posters used to promote La La Land for the international market.
