Those giant home page ads

First, there were banners. Now it is almost full screen ads.

The dog days of summer are here.

Along with hot temperatures in the three-figure category, humidity, flight cancellations and January 6 House Investigation prime time shows, we are also witnessing the sudden appearance of giant ads dominating the home pages of newspapers, especially The New York Times.

I thought I had clicked the wrong key when I saw the ad below for Apple Pay, one that pushes the logo of The Times to the bottom of the screen and dominates almost completely.

Ads such as this are the equivalent of full front page ads, also popular with many newspapers around the world these days of economic hardship.

It would be interesting to see how audiences react to such ads.

Ironically, many users do not enter a newspaper edition via the home page. Instead, they come in with a link from social media that usually takes them to an article page.

I am curious to see if these giant ads migrate to article pages in the near future.

Will keep an eye on it!
