Adobe XD: a prototyping tool for UX designers

We are introduced to the use of this software for creating mobile friendly stories.

My Columbia University students welcomed Adobe’s Tara Knight to discuss Adobe XD, a prototyping tool for UX designers that seems to be ideal for those creating linear, visual stories for mobile. Tara is a Senior Strategic Development Manager at Adobe.

This presentation comes at the right time as students prepare for their final project in my Multiplatform Design & Storytelling class. They will write a mobile linear story using multimedia.

Adobe XD is one of the many softwares that they may consider for their final project, so I thought it would be ideal to invite Tara Knight to explain the features of Adobe XD.

Go here to take a look at Adobe XD:

Tara created a story board then a story using Adobe XD to demonstrate the software to students. She prefaced her demo with this:

“We are constantly reimagining content for the screen and that is where technology comes into play. Mobile storytelling is all about immediacy and quickness. Our behaviors are changing quickly when it comes to consuming content. The possibilities for reading today are wider.”

The students and I are impressed with how easy Adobe XD is to use and look forward to its further development. Adobe XD allows designers and non-designers alike the ability to design for mobile, linear storytelling, and provide high-fidelity prototypes that present a rich, interactive experience for development—or in this case, for portfolios.. One drawback at the moment is that videos can’t be embedded, although Tara mentioned that this will be possible “very soon”.

Otherwise, I find Adobe XD ideal for my own work in outlining and executing prototypes. The designer can experiment with type and color palettes. There is the possibility to see your story through vertical or horizontal scrolling. More advanced prototyping features like voice commands and audio playback open up multiple modes of accessing and experiencing content.

Here are some screen shots I took during Tara’s presentation as she used a sample story to introduce the various features to students

Below, Tara Knight shows a video clip of how a linear story was constructed using Adobe XD:
