Good content, simple design make this Times’ story rock

It’s a 24-page supplement, without ads, based on a simple premise, which serves as the title of the piece: I Quit.

This was the print edition cover for the 24-page New York Times supplement,
without ads.

The best stories are the ones with an element of consequence and human interest.

When the headline reads “I Quit” on the cover of the supplement, we all immediately identify. Who among us has uttered those words, or who doesn’t think about it often, for whatever reason.

Many want to quit doing laundry (fat chance!), others would like to quit more heavenly pleasures, such as drinking wine with dinner, or indulging in an apple pie a la mode for dessert too often.

Well, The New York Times has assembled two dozen I QUIT stories that will resonate with everyone. One person quit the priesthood, another quit sex, one quit the iPhone, and a writer involved in the story itself, quit the story. Yes, a presidential candidate for the 2020 election, quit the campaign.

Aside from the topic, which I am sure will be picked up and done at newspapers globally—because the theme is universal—I told my Columbia students Monday that this is an example of simple design carried identically through platforms. One look and feel, one typographic palette and a fun read throughout.
