I urge everyone to take a look at how The Washington Post has commemorated the first anniversary of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, their colleague who was brutally murdered in what many believe was an act carried out under orders of the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Take a look at the story here:
The print version is also beautifully designed by Chris Rukan. It is classic, authoritative, with excellent and relevant content about the horrific death of a journalist that shocked the world and for which many questions remain.
Here is what Washington Post Design Director, Greg Manifold, wrote me about this work:
Worth noting that this year, the Opinions team created an Art Director role for the first time in recent memory. Chris Rukan moved over from our News Design team to partner with the Opinions staff under the direction of Opinions Editor Fred Hiatt. The work has been outstanding.
Illustration credits: Brian Stauffer for all of the conceptual work. Believe it was 14 pieces in all. Portrait illustration by @daviddespau. Art Direction: Chris Rukan
Fantastic illustration work by
This is excellent, impressive and necessary work. A great example of how Writing/Editing/Design—what I call the WED concept—can make important content like this shine! It is also a reminder than investing in print is still worth it in the mobile era. Mobile can never compete with print when it comes to the display of large photos and illustrations. This supplement from the WaPo design team shows it splendidly well.

Mario García
Editorial consultant Mario García has advised the most important newsrooms in the world on design – and how best adapt to a digital transition. Other than being an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, he also runs his own consultancy firm: García Media. Nowadays his speciality is how digital devices influence narrative structure and consumption; his latest book, The Story, was written specifically to be read on a phone. Here, though, he confesses to a few analogue pleasures.
