Wednesday potpourri

It’s the middle of the week and here is what the morning inbox brings of interest!

Three for the road here. Items from here and there that have caught my eye this Wednesday!

The big Fox in-depth from The Times

Be on the lookout this weekend for a super in-depth piece . The subject: Rupert Murdoch‘s media empire. Two Times reporters interviewed 150+ people in three countries. But this is not just a story about Fox the network. It is about the Rupert Murdoch empire and its influence across borders, including the UK and Australia. This is how the story starts:

MURDOCH AND HIS CHILDREN HAVE TOPPLED GOVERNMENTS ON TWO CONTINENTS AND DESTABILIZED THE MOST IMPORTANT DEMOCRACY ON EARTH. WHAT DO THEY WANT?

The City is a new publication

For us New Yorkers, there is a new place to turn to for news about the Big Apple.

“The City” calls itself “an independent, nonprofit news outlet dedicated to hard-hitting reporting that serves the people of New York.” The website has launched and it uses bold type for headlines. It also has one of those familiar NY pigeons on its logo and, indeed, it is asking readers to help them name the pigeon.

I vote for Frank, to honor Frank Sinatra and New York, New York, that hymn of our city.

Apple News+

Apple’s new premium news bundle, Apple News+ was launched a week ago.

Now, The New York Times’ Edmund Lee‘s in-depth look at Apple News contains this news: “More than 200,000 people subscribed to Apple News Plus in its first 48 hours —” And his story has lots more info here..

Not bad at all, but the verdict is still out on how successful this will be. I think it would be grand if smaller publications, such as regional newspapers, could be part of the Apple bundle. Just a thought. Those newspapers need the support more than their big counterparts.
