When that product comes from the kitchen of The Marshall Project, known for its award-winning journalism, then there are double reasons to celebrate.
The new product is News Inside, a magazine that includes curated content from The Marshall Project. The brainstorm of Lawrence Bartley, a staffer of TMP who was himself incarcerated, News Inside is already circulating in 30 facilities in 19 states.
Bartley says he knows what it is like to be inside a prison, and the limitations to access news and information or materials for study for those seeking to get degrees while in jail.
So I know the frustrations of a hungry mind in prison. News Inside is my attempt to feed that hunger with credible information about the world of criminal justice—free of charge and free of hassles. I know gaining entrance to some institutions may prove to be difficult. Prison administrators’ first responsibility is the safety and security of their facilities, and they are careful to prohibit material they believe could be inflammatory or stir unrest. I respect that, and I have carefully curated a selection of articles that I hope will inspire thought and discussion without disturbing the peace.
