Why I would show this Times Mag cover to my class

Those of us who teach and who conduct design workshops are constantly looking for examples that resonate. Here is another one!

While  my Multiplatform Design & Storytelling class at Columbia does not meet till Spring Semester, I am already working on changes for the syllabus, and collecting new examples to share with the students.

This cover from Sunday’s New York Times Magazine has been added to my collection.

This cover reflects “playful” in two seconds.  The way the photograph has been cropped and displayed, the way the tennis ball crosses the magazine’s logo, and, ultimately, how type has motion, which, for an edition of the magazine devoted to the US Tennis Open, adds perspective and visual context.
