Tony Awards: And the winner so far…..

It is Tony Awards season on Broadway: the Oscars of the theater world are coming up June 11, but the nominations were announced last week. The winner so far: The New York Times. Look at all those glorious color ads on the Times’ Sunday Edition.

Sometimes nothing beats the way print editions can do it, especially when it comes to powerful advertising.

One of those occasions took place this week: nominations for the Tony Awards, which will be presented at Radio City in New York City, June 11.  It is what theater lovers, like me, wait for. The event that determines what shows and performers on Broadway deserve the top honors.  This year is a especially competitive—and exciting—one, with many musicals and musical stars—should I say divas?—vying for the top honor: think Bette Midler, Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole, among them.

But, first, look at the ads…..

Until the winners are announced,  I think the votes are in for an early winner: The New York Times.

In its Sunday edition, in the Arts & Leisure section one (there are two such sections each Sunday), with a total of 30 pages, there are 15 pages devoted to Tony nomination advertising for specific shows. A bonanza of advertising revenue for the Times, and a real treat for us readers, who get to feast on tons of details about every nomination and every category, plus what the critics have said about each show.

Take a look at the five, double page and four single page ads here.
