Austin Design Summit today

Speaking at the Gatehouse Media Design Summit today: topics range from a State of the Media 2017 to the specifics of story structures, grids and color palettes across platforms.

Gatehouse Media and audience reach with titles across the country.

Two of the newspaper titles published by Gatehouse Media: one unifying look and centerpieces on Page One.

For the next two days I will be in-house at Gatehouse Media headquarters in Austin to conduct workshops for the editorial team, including designers, as well as offering two keynote presentations on the State of the Media 2017, to be attended by guests that will include journalists, designers, educators and students.

Highlight of the Keynote:

It's all about multiplatforms, and our new definition of design goes beyond just the visuals. It is about the junction at which visuals, storytelling and technology meet.

Centerpieces:

Our Garcia Media work with the team from Gatehouse Media involves creating a look and feel that applies to the many titles in the group (more than 400 at the moment–including 121 dailies and hundreds of community newspapers).  One of the design elements of the new look is the creation of centerpiece stories—the ones that jump at the reader when they first look at Page One, and perhaps the one story that represents local enterprise and that surprises the reader.

One of our tasks during the next two days is to work with designers, who work from the group's editorial hub in Austin, Texas, as they prepare to get more titles to adopt the new design in 2017.
