Attracting those younger readers (1): one gift subscription at a time

Publishers everywhere dream of attracting those elusive young readers, 18 to 25, or even younger. It is not easy, so creative strategies must be considered. At The New York Times: buy a gift subscription for a youngster. Does it work?

I think it’s clever and I wonder how successful this campaign is, but I like The New York Times idea of offering gift subscriptions for students.  So, if you are an adult who believes in newspapers, the importance of a free press and its role in a democracy, perhaps you would like to introduce a young person to what you consider to be an essential part of keeping informed.

Here is the deal:

The New York Times will match every subscription sponsored with your contribution. At an average cost of $3 per annual student subscription, a $50 contribution can fund a mid-sized class for one year.
