Miguel De Lorenzi and I worked together when I did a redesign of La Voz del Interior, the newspaper of Cordoba, Argentina. It was an exhilarating experience, and, as is always the case, I learned much from the art director assigned to my team and me. It was obvious that Miguel—-whom everyone affectionately calls Cachoito—-was an artist in the truest sense of the word.
His eye for illustration, and his methodical approach to informational graphics, were many steps above what the average newspaper art director normally devotes to these areas. His office in the newspaper was a sort of gallery, and I remember stopping the work at hand to sample Cachoito’s collections of old type fonts, or his marvelous illustrations, some dating back to the 1960s. It was an environment in which one received constant inspiration from his surroundings.
When he went home, Cachoito continued his artistic pursuits, transforming himself from newspaper art director who deals with the realities of breaking news to the artist who paints on a canvas where nobody limits his space or the range of his creativity.
Now he has shown his body of work during a month-long exhibit in Cordoba. Tomorrow the exhibit will close, but the main event will be the presentation of Cachoito’s new book, capturing the best of his work.
“This has been a very special experience for me. After retiring as design director of La Voz del Interior, I have continued to do pages for them, but also have more time for my painting and other artistic work. My book captures these images,“ he said .
